Bentoak
Farm is nestled in the heart of historic Lowndes County Alabama in the small
town of Benton. Currently there is a population of 64 people who reside here.
Benton, in the 1800’s was a riverboat and railroad town and had a risky
reputation for being a "wild west" town with hotels and saloons on
Mainstreet.
In those days every one in town after dark must carry a
"six shooter" on their hip. Today our children play in the streets,
ride horses and play with our Jack Russell Terriers with the other children in
town. Bentoak is a small farm dedicated to excellence
in breeding and producing quality McCurdy Plantation horses as well as
naturally gaited Tennessee Walkers.
The McCurdy family of
Lowndes County developed the McCurdy Plantation Horse in the 1800's. In 1993
The McCurdy Plantation Horse Registry was established and in 1995 the Association was founded to preserve
this wonderful line of pleasure horses. Originally, the early McCurdys such as
the famous McCurdy’s Doctor and McCurdy’s Fox were registered in the
Tennessee Walking Horse Association as foundation stock when this registry was
originated in the 1930’s. As time passed the people of this area continued to
breed these wonderful horses for endurance, calm disposition and a smooth gait.
However, few people could see the need in maintaining the registered status of
these pleasure horses since their primary purpose at this time was not for show.
Through extensive research in the TWBEA records, we have located many McCurdy
horses that are still recorded in this registry. A major goal of Bentoak farm is
to preserve the Tennessee walking Horse link to the McCurdy Plantation horse and
develop and produce a line of quality double registered horses.
