January 14, 2006

Dear friends, I just returned from a week in Ala w/ Tammy, as most of you know Jim suffered serious internal injuries after falling 25 feet out of a tree stand the day after Christmas. He then unfortunately developed septicemia, and was placed on life support. Jim had a trachestomy done on Wednesday, and still on the ventilator----to hopefully let him wake up without the ET tube down his throat and causing panic attacks. It had been 10 days in an anesthesia induced coma. Thursday morning he started waking up ,and has progressed successfully and calmly to being able to move all his limbs on command, and mouth words to Tammy. This morning the doctor called her and said for the first time he feels that Jim has turned the corner in this whole ordeal. It is still a critical situation, but he is awake and can move. The progress will be slow and deliberate. We are all SO thrilled. Keep up the prayer vigil, for both Jim and Tammy, Colleen

Wednesday,  Jan. 18th-----I talked with Tammy this morning,  and Jim is making progress in the ICU.   He is still on the ventilator and breathing through the tracheostomy,  but it is on a low setting.   He is responding  to the antibiotic therapy, and his cultures are coming back negative,  although he will be on long term   IV antibiotics for protection.  Yesterday morning when Tammy went into his room he picked up her hand and kissed it.  He also mouthed to her that he wanted food!    All other medical issues are holding steady,  he is experiencing some abdominal distention due to swallowing air through his mouth  which goes into his stomach ,  so his doctor is addressing that issue.  He is able to move his arms and legs,  and is awake and responding well with his care givers and family.

Friends,  I just spoke with Tammy this evening,  they had a wonderful day today.   Jim was taken off of the respirator from 6am till 9pm tonight, he was breathing on his own,  and they put a diaphragm in the trach so he could talk.  Tammy says he has been  sitting up in  his ICU  bed and talking all day,  and got to speak  with Kayla and Logan on the phone.  He told Tammy that he Remembers lots of things that people said to him while he was in the drug induced coma,  words of encouragement......even though he could not respond------ He has been drinking lots  of ice water and his Ensure,  and says he is ready for food!   Also stated that he will never turn down another glass of ice water in his life----  the  chest tube was removed last week on Jan. 14th,  so he is down to the trachestomy  tube and his IV's.  Tammy said she has been laughing all day at some of the things Jim has had to say,   and  she is SO happy to hear his voice again!!

Thursday, Jan. 26-

Jim was moved to a private room Wednesday night, and had his first full day out of ICU yesterday!! He still has the trach, and requires assistance from the ventilator when he gets exhausted, his diaphragm muscles are having to regain their strength. Vicki says Jim is Very weak, and it took 2 large nurses, plus Tammy and Vicki to get Jim up and into a chair. Of course he has lost weight and his muscles have atrophied from laying in bed for 4 weeks. So it will take time to regain his strength and get used to being vertical again. Also he ate a Chick-Fil-A and had a coke yesterday, and he is very happy to get regular food ! He is still talking up a storm , and is quite the comedian whether he means to be or not. After being in a coma for 2 weeks, and being given so much anesthesia and pain medications, and not knowing if it's day or night---- Jim is getting more clear about the events and what he has been through. He has told Tammy and Vicki some funny things that he's experienced that seem very real to him but of course aren't--- for example he says that he had several raccoons that lived in his room, and he had to get in the box with them and get down on his hands and knees to drink water with them, because the nurses wouldn't give him any. He told Vicki that those are some "high dollar raccoons! " Also he told Vicki and Tammy that he has been bribing the nurses with a 2 carat diamond that Dudley gave him, to get them to bring him water and pain medication---saying " promising them diamonds works every time! " So the Jim we all know and love is making a come back----he is also cussin' and fussin' with the respiratory and physical therapists that are coming in and making him do stuff. Everything is painful and hard to do, especially with 8 broken ribs. -------With this new progress both Tammy and Jim are exhausted---she is staying in the room with him as much as possible to make this transition. Please hold off on visitations for the time being, and if you do go, please stay only a very short time. Jim is very uncomfortable and has alot of caregivers working on him 24/7, and they are all under alot of stress and strain, emotionally and physically. So please keep up all the prayers and praises that Jim is continuing to make such good progress!

Dear Friends--  9:30 AM   Just talked to Tammy,  she and Jim were sitting together in their big loveseat in their living room with the dog on their lap,  watching TV !!!  Jim Has Been Home for 24 hours,  and has made huge progress.  He can get up & down from the bed by himself.  He is re-gaining strength in his legs and arms,  and is ambulating around the house on his own.    I got to talk to Jim on the phone,  and he sounds great!!  It was so wonderful to hear his voice again.   Tammy says Jim Needs Visitors !!   He loves to talk,  and is ready to see all of his friends again.  She said 20 minute visits are best,  and folks are welcome anytime during the day,  but he gets really tired by 7PM  .    Both of them are SO HAPPY,  and appreciate everything that everyone has done or said on Jim's behalf---they are so thankful to be loved by all of you.  Tammy and Jim appreciate all of the prayer warriors that have stood in the gap for Jim,  and are thankful for the miracle that has taken place!
Saturday, April 1
Dear friends, Jim and I would like to thank everyone for the heart felt concern, prayers, calls, gifts, food, cards and emails that have been sent on our behalf.  Jim is doing much better. He is going to physical therapy and getting stronger slowly but surely. Saturday was a great day for us. I got to participate in the Spring McCurdy ride and Jim joined us for lunch. Jim is able to drive again and is trying to rebuild his life.
